Gareth first came into the spotlight in July 2019 when he was included in Ireland’s T20I squad for a bilateral home series against Zimbabwe. He made his T20I (and international) debut in that series but had a rather forgettable outing, getting tonked for 25 runs in just 2 overs.
In July 2019, he had also been selected to represent the Dublin Chiefs in the inaugural edition of the Euro T20 Slam (a professional T20 cricket league that aimed to involve 6 city-based franchise teams – 2 each from Ireland, Scotland, and the Netherlands). However, about a month later, the tournament was canceled.
About a month later, he recorded his first impactful performance on the international stage. In the 3rd game of a T20I tri-series that also featured Scotland and Netherlands, in front of his home crowd, he put up a fabulous all-round show. He recorded his maiden T20I fifty and also bagged 2 key wickets. Ireland, with 10 points, eventually topped the points table in that tournament and secured the title.
In September 2019, he was included in Ireland’s squad for the 2019 ICC World T20 Qualifier tournament. He was the 3rd highest-run getter for Ireland in the tournament (150 runs) and had also scalped 9 wickets at a tidy economy rate of under 7 runs per over. During that tournament, his cousin David had recorded the then fastest ball bowled by an Irish cricketer – clocked at 92 mph (148 kph).
Gareth’s all-round performances were instrumental in helping Ireland finish 3rd overall in that tournament and qualify for the 2021 edition of the ICC World T20. He made it to the Irish squad for that tournament as well.
In January 2020, he was one of the 19 male players who were awarded a central contract by Cricket Ireland (officially known as the Irish Cricket Union, the national governing body for cricket on the island of Ireland (both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland) that oversees the national men’s and women’s cricket teams). This was the first year in which all contracts were awarded on a full-time basis to Irish professional cricketers.
In July 2021, his older sister Laura broke the captaincy record for Irish women, when she led their senior team for the 63rd time in international cricket.
