sharon malheiro obituary
One Iowa was made aware of Sharon Malheiro's passing today, who was a co-founder of our organisation. Our souls are in sadness over the passing of a legendary figure.
Not only did Sharon provide the way for Iowa to become the third state in the nation to win the right for same-sex couples to marry, but the verdict in Varnum v. Brien helped steer the way for a ruling by the federal Supreme Court in 2015. Sharon paved the way for Iowa to become the third state in the nation to secure the right for same-sex couples to marry.
Up until the very end of her life, Sharon remained a staunch advocate for LGBTQ rights in the state of Iowa. A couple of weeks ago, I had a conversation with her, and at the time, she was formulating ideas regarding who we ought to talk to in order to stop the damaging anti-trans legislation in our state. She was always ready with a tale of something that had worked in the past and something that hadn't. She wanted more than anything for us to keep fighting for what was right and she would have done anything to make that happen.
Despite the fact that she placed a high priority on advocating for LGBTQ rights, she regularly reminded me to cherish my loved ones, to tell my teammates that she is pleased with them, and that she loves me. She loved with all her heart. How blessed we are to have had the opportunity to witness her warmheartedness, listen to her stories, and enjoy her loud laugh.
She was a shining example of the species. We shall long look forward to her as someone who was instrumental in the transformation of both our state and our nation. In the near future, a more in-depth summary of her life will be made available.
One Iowa's Sharon Malheiro is, was, and will forever be a member of that organisation.
As soon as we obtain further information on her final arrangements, we will share it with you here on this page. I have high hopes that you would join us in honouring Sharon as the genuine advocate that she was.
Courtney with the other members of the One Iowa team.

A Prayer for Sharon malheiro and for Those Who Love Her
O God of the Living and the Dead, please Sharon malheiro, who we hope has come into your realm today. Award harmony, light, and everlasting youth to her who has been taken from us while still a kid. May he always be aware of the tinge of your affection and the gleam of your light in your vast domain? Look delicately upon her family, whose hearts are overburdened with distress. Stroll with them; console them; encompass them with heavenly messengers to lift them from the profundity of their grievous misfortune. At long last. We stand as a family in our moments of triumph and bliss; grant us the mental fortitude to remain as a family even in the absence of Sharon malheiro. May we console each other with expressions of confidence, trust, and love. Persuade our hearts that everything works for the good of those who trust in God. So be it.
Who is Sharon malheiro?
Sharon Malheiro, an attorney whose career spanned decades and who obtained some of the most significant civil rights victories in Iowa, passed away on Sunday night. Malheiro was known for fighting "for the underdog" throughout her career. One Iowa, a non-profit organisation that she co-founded in 2006 to advocate for LGBTQ people in the state of Iowa, made the announcement of her passing on social media.
Suzanna de Baca, CEO of Business Publications Corp., said in her address presenting Malheiro in 2019 when DSM Magazine honoured Malheiro with an LGBTQ career Leader Award that "Sharon's legacy of service, in particular in the legal arena, is legendary, and she is a very special person." Malheiro was honoured with this award for her work as an LGBTQ legacy leader.
Malheiro began his career as an attorney in Des Moines in the year 1990 after graduating from Drake University Law School. She led the successful campaign on behalf of the LGBT Community Center of Central Iowa to get the city council to pass an anti-discrimination legislation.
Malheiro was also one of the pioneers in the push that culminated in the amendment of the Iowa Civil Rights Act to protect sexual orientation and gender identity. This amendment was a direct result of Malheiro's efforts. Her most notable success, however, occurred in 2009 when she was one of the lead attorneys in the case of Varnum v. Brien. This was the lawsuit that successfully fought for the recognition of marriage equality in the state of Iowa.
