Star jockey Jamie Kah charged by stewards over white powder pics

Superstar jockey Jamie Kah is facing a possible lengthy suspension after being charged by racing stewards for conduct “prejudicial to the image of racing” after becoming embroiled in an alleged white powder scandal.

After photos of Group 1 winning Kah, with what appears to be white powder, began to circulate on social media last month, Racing Victoria launched an investigation.

On Friday, RV issued one charge each against Kah and Ruby McIntyre, who was also in the pictures, alleging McIntyre recorded Kah using an identification card to arrange a white powder substance into three lines during a gathering at Kah’s home in June.

As part of the charges, RV said the “perception amongst persons commenting on the posts being that those in attendance at the gathering used an illicit substance” and that was enough to charge Kah under the rules of racing.

“The stewards allege that Ms Kah and Ms McIntyre‘s conduct, as outlined in the particulars, was prejudicial to the image, interests, integrity and/or welfare of racing,” RV said in a statement on Friday.

The photos were published as Kah recovered from a serious race fall that left her in hospital for three weeks. She is yet to return to race riding and that could be delayed should she be suspended by RV as a result of the charges.

Kah, who was the first female to claim the Melbourne jockeys’ premiership, responded to the publishing of the photos on social media.

“I am working hard to get back to doing what I love, and that is being a passionate and successful jockey,” the 27-year-old wrote on social media.

“I will continue to focus on my physical and mental health and making a full recovery so I can return to racing and be the best person that I can possibly be.”

The charges will be heard by the Victorian Racing Tribunal at a later date.
